Multiple Exposures, Creating a Portfolio of Images

8. Mar, 2016

For my final term and end of year exhibition I have been looking at nostalgia, and how we look at the past with an almost romaticised memory. With childhood memories seeming to hold extremes, summers seemed hotter, longer and full of fun, and bad things that happened often become remembered and magnified into much more important events. As my work is usually landscape or architecture related it seemed logical to carry on this theme. To give myself a challenge I wanted to use my love of experimenting with multiple eposures to show an interpretation of how I thought of religion as a child. I always imagined that in a sort of weird cartoon way God would shout down from the clouds at me if he was angry, or there might be rays of light if he was pleased. In the images for this project I have tried to use the suggestion of light beams from above to represent this childhood idea, and as a hidden extra, I am using triple exposures to represent the holy trinity.

I have had a great deal of fun putting together this project a may carry in on after my degree is over. I do sometimes get some strange looks lying on the floor of a church, but I am used to people thinking I am slightly weird. It's not unusual to have questions about why on earth I am there but on the bright side, at least I get noticed! This image is St Marys church in Tenby, its a beautiful building and well work a visit.

Planning For Business Success

24. Feb, 2016

Now I am getting to the end of my third year I am starting to think seriously about how I can, not only get noticed, but also how I can start to make a career from what I love, taking photographs. There are quite a few options for me to consider, I want to stay locally as I have family ties, but I can still find opportunities.

There are plenty of online options, stock photography agencies can be a good soure of income provided you can find a niche market, this may mean specialising in one area so that people automatically think of you work when for example if they think of trees (just to give a random subject). If you can find something as a trademark people will start to notice you. This is half the battle and may take some time, the more work you have listed the more chance you have Alamy for example as probably the biggest stock agency have over 60million photos listed so it's no good putting up 50 photos and expecting to make your fortune. Alamy also have a news reportage section you can sign up for, this would be idea for a fastworking photographer who can turn, for example pictures of the flooding we have had this winter, into a current news story.

The style of photography you choose will determine your career direction but it never hurts to have several options. Over the next few weeks I will be looking at more of these options. My own direction may include travel photography as I love to try new places.

Cardiff's Poppy Tree

25. Jan, 2016

Last week I managed to get to Cardiff on one of the few dry days we've had since about October. I had a few spare days before going back to college, so this was the perfect chance to get out. As always, even though I had some shopping to do I couldn't leave the camera at home, just in case.

I had already decided to visit to church in the center, just to see if it would help my work later this term. It was one that I missed last year, I ran out of time, but knew it could be a a starting point for the next part, so it has been on the back burner for a while. It was worth the wait! The inside has plenty of details I can use, and even better, in the grounds they have a remembrance tree. This tree has giant poppies under the main branches it is pretty eyecatching, no-one could possibly miss it even on a dull day. I think it's a great way to remember the past.

Just in case anyone is wondering I did finally do some shopping, walking boots for outdoor photography and a sketch book for my last big project (And yes I am photo obsessed).

Trip to London

13. Jan, 2016

Before Christmas a few of us from college went up to London for a few days. Apart from photographic exhibitions I managed to visit a few of my favorite places, including the Natural History Museum.  I love London although I don't think I would want to live there, there are so many fantastic places to visit that I never seem to fit everything in, always a good excuse for a return visit!

Because we were lucky enough to be staying centrally, not far from Russell Square, I also visited the British Museum,  there was a fantastic display in the central court celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead, there were pink lights on the ceiling like Chinese lanterns and a huge skeleton by the stairs, in the evening the whole area was lit with pink and orange floodlights. The whole effect was colourful and eyecatching, it was interesting to see the mix of old and new together, especially in such a historic building, with its own mix of old and new.

Night Photography First Ever Starlight Shots

11. Nov, 2015

Although I have done lots of night photography I have never tried to capture the stars, partly this is because living in a built up area it is easier to do street life and light trails. The other reason is that although I am happy in my own company, for safety it makes sense for me to have someone with me. This adds to the complicted right time and place, right weather, lunar positioning, and tide time problems. I finally managed to get all the conditions needed to coincide, so a friend and I headed down to the coast to a small isolated place called Abereidddy. This is the ideal location as there is very little light pollution, and even better there is parking right by the sea.

After reading up on technique we both set up (in the dark, using torches, and a lot of guess work with composition) We hit on the idea of both setting up together and turning out the lights together so as not to interfere with the night light (or each other). This worked well for just starlight but we would have to rethink if we wanted to use flash. Surprisingly we both ended up with some reasonable shots, and are already thinking of new places to try, we might be able to get star trails!
